Ľ Animal Control
The Animal Control Division was formed in July of 2012 and is dedicated to provide the best possible service to the citizens of the City of Somerton. The main objective of this division is to educate the community about the importance of maintaining their pets in a secure environment, to encourage proper dog licensing and reunite owners with their pets whenever possible. A temporary dog shelter is located within City limits where dogs are maintained up to 48 hours before being transferred to the Humane Society of Yuma where they will be kept for another 3-5 days before being placed for adoption.
An Animal Control Officer responds to calls related to animals at large, animal cruelty cases, dog bite cases, and a variety of situations involving domesticated animals.
As of July 1, 2012 all dogs must be registered with the City of Somerton when the dog becomes 3 months of age. Dog registrations are open year-round at the Community Development Department from Monday through Friday from 7am to 6pm. Registration forms are also available online.
A Tip Line has been established to allow citizens to call to report animal issues.
